Panda Researchers Dress Up to Help Cubs

Researchers dress up as pandasResearchers try to approach giant panda Taotao and its mother Caocao (Photo: Reuters)
How do you coax a panda into a cage and prepare it for the wild? Dress like one.

That's what staff at the Wolong Nature Reserve in China's Sichuan province are doing to lure two-year-old Taotao into a crate before releasing the young panda into the wild.

The zoo keepers smeared their costumes with panda feces and urine to hide any traces of human scent and avoided interference from the mother by distracting her with bamboo.

They were transferred from a 2,100-metre high mountain to Hetaoping Research and Conservation Center for a health examination and to be prepared for reintroduction to the wild. It's the last step of Taotao's months-long journey. Researchers have been prepping the two-year-old for his reintroduction into the wild.

Meanwhile in the nearby capital of Chengdu, another panda mother celebrated the one month birthday of her twin cubs.

Staff members at that breeding facility have made it their mission to help populate pandas, which are now seen as coming back from the brink of extinction.

HOW TO CALL THE POLICE.... WHEN YOU'RE OLD AND DON'T MOVE FAST ANYMORE.

George Phillips , an elderly man, from Meridian, Mississippi, was going up to bed, when his wife told him that he'd left the light on in the garden shed, which she could see from the bedroom window.

George opened the back door to go turn off the light, but saw that there were people in the shed stealing things.

He phoned the police, who asked "Is someone in your house?"

He said "No," but some people are breaking into my garden shed and stealing from me.

Then the police dispatcher said "All patrols are busy. You should lock your doors and an officer will be along when one is available."

George said, "Okay."

He hung up the phone and counted to 30.

Then he phoned the police again.

"Hello, I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people stealing things from my shed. Well, you don't have to worry about them now because I just shot them.", and he hung up.

In five minutes, six Police Cars, a SWAT Team, a Police Dog, Fire Truck, a Paramedic, and an Ambulance showed up at the residence, and caught the burglars red-handed.

One of the Policemen said to George, "I thought you said that you'd shot them!"

George said, "I thought you said there was nobody available!"

A 26-year-old youngster of Tirupur has designed an eco friendly cab, a modified cycle rickshaw, that can run manually or be operated with battery. The three-seater vehicle can run a maximum speed of 45 km per hour and will utilise solar energy to charge its batteries.

The vehicle can also be pedalled and the mechanical energy will be saved to the battery, explains the designer of the cab, Sivaraj Muthukumaran, who on Saturday exhibited his invention to find a place in India Book of Records.

Explaining the mechanism of the vehicle, Muthukumaran said that the vehicle will weigh less than 120 kg and can be pedalled. Two batteries used for cars will be fitted in the vehicle and these batteries will be linked to solar panels in the vehicle.

The mechanical energy generated through pedalling will also be saved to the battery. Besides, the batteries can be recharged through the direct current, he says.

The vehicle will not emit smoke and is easy to maintain. Further it will be ideal to translocate students and others travelling for short distances.

Patent and finishing works for the green vehicle is underway and it will soon hit the market. The vehicle can be provided free of cost or at subsidised rates to serve the disabled, adds the youngster who has a master degree in business administration.

Japan toilet maker unveils 'poop-powered' motorbike

Japan toilet maker TOTO has unveiled a motorcycle with a nose-wrinkling difference - it's 'poop-powered'.

Billed as the world's first waste-powered vehicle, the three-wheeler has a toilet in place of a regular seat and a huge paper roll at the back.

TOKYO (AFP) - Japan's best-known toilet maker on Wednesday unveiled a "poop-powered" motorcycle that can travel as far as 300km on a tank filled with animal waste.

Billed as the world's first waste-powered vehicle, the three-wheeler has a toilet in place of a regular seat and huge paper roll at the back.

But as a young female model climbed aboard for a test drive Wednesday, toilet giant TOTO was quick to point out that she would not supply the "gas".

"The biogas it uses as fuel is not made from human waste. It's made from livestock waste and sewage," Kenji Fujita, a company spokesman, told reporters in a Tokyo suburb.

TYPICAL MALAYSIAN DRIVERS

Crescent Lake in Dunhuang China

Crescent Lake in Dunhuang China

Crescent lake also called Yueyaquan in Chinese is a beautiful crescent-shaped lake located 6 km south of the Dunhuang city in the arms of the Echoing-Sand Dune. The Crescent Lake's water is so pure and clear that it looks like an emerald jewel in the sand. Along the side of the Crescent Lake is a pagoda in traditional Han Chinese architecture.

A street lined with souvenir stalls leads up from the entrance to the complex. Many tourists ride camels here, organized by the complex operators, to get to the summit of the sand dunes.

The lake has been in existence for at least two thousands, but for the last few decades it has been gradually disappearing. According to measurement made in 1960, the average depth of the lake was 4 to 5 meters, with maximum depth 7.5 meters. In the early 1990s, the area of the lake had shrunken to only 1.37-acre (5,500 m2) with average depth of 0.9 meter (maximum 1.3 meter). Crescent Lake has dropped more than 25 feet in the last three decades while the underground water table elsewhere in the area has fallen by as much as 35 feet.

Dangerous road in the world

According to the Inter-American Development Bank, the Death Road in Bolivia is statistically the most dangerous road in the world. Every year, 200 to 300 people die along a stretch of dirt road less than 50 miles. The 43-mile road leads northeast from the La Paz to Coroico, in the Yungas region of Bolivia. Along the way, it winds up and down through the Andes Mountains...
